Weather Alert: Heavy Rain Possible in Chungcheong and North Jeolla… Rain to Continue Nationwide Through the 31st

As of the morning of August 30, heavy rain of 20–30 mm per hour is falling mainly over the Jeolla region and southern parts of the Gyeongsang region. Heavy rain may continue through the morning in Chungcheong and Jeolla and through the afternoon in Gyeongsang. Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungnam are expected to receive 80–150 mm, with some areas receiving more than 200 mm. Rain will mostly stop in the southern regions and Jeju by the evening of the 31st, while parts of central Korea may see rain continue through the morning of September 1.

Heavy rain of 20–30 mm per hour may continue through the morning in Chungcheong and Jeolla and through the afternoon in Gyeongsang, so check regional forecasts before going out or traveling on the holiday.

Heavy Rain May Be Concentrated in Chungcheong and North Jeolla

From August 29 through 6 a.m. on August 30, 50–120 mm of rain fell across Chungcheong, North Jeolla, and Gyeongsang. Some areas along the northern west coast of North Jeolla recorded more than 150 mm. Expected rainfall from August 30 to 31 varies significantly by region.

Channel A reported on August 29 that more than 200 mm of rain was expected in Chungnam and North Jeolla, more than 150 mm in Chungbuk, and that overnight torrential rain was possible. However, rainfall amounts may differ even within the same region and should not be generalized as nationwide figures.

Even when rain falls nationwide, areas receiving the heaviest rain and the largest totals may differ.

When Will the Rain Continue Until?

According to the KMA forecast, rain will mostly stop in the southern regions and Jeju by the evening of the 31st. In central Korea, some areas may continue to see rain through the morning of September 1. Rather than assuming that rain will stop nationwide at the same time, check the hourly forecast for the areas where you will be traveling.

Places to Avoid During Heavy Rain

The KMA advised people in areas experiencing heavy rain to observe the following precautions.

Avoid entering riverside walking paths and underpasses.
Be aware of the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas and overflowing rivers.
Exercise caution regarding landslide risks and traffic safety.
